The Church of St Anne, Shandon, dates to 1722, and its distinctive clock tower — half red sandstone, half white limestone — is Cork’s most recognisable landmark, topped with a 3.4-metre salmon weathervane. Climb the 132 steps and you can ring the 8 bells yourself using the roped levers and a provided tune sheet — Cork is one of the few places in the world where visitors can play a full peal.
From the open-air balcony you get a 360° view across the city to the harbour. The four clock faces tell different times (thanks to wind resistance), earning it the local nickname ‘the four-faced liar’. Allow 45 minutes. Just north of the city centre across the River Lee.
