Gougane Barra — ‘the hermitage of Finbarr’ — is a glacial lake ringed by mountains in the Shehy range, 1 hour’s drive west of Cork city. St Finbarr founded a 6th-century monastery on the small island in the lake; the tiny stone oratory that stands there today (rebuilt in 1901) is one of Ireland’s most photographed sights, especially at dawn.
The surrounding Gougane Barra Forest Park has signposted trails from a gentle 15-minute stroll to a 2-hour hill-walk up to Knockbeg viewpoint. Entry to the forest park is €5 per car; the oratory itself is free. The Gougane Barra Hotel on the lake shore serves excellent lunch. Allow 3 hours.
