No. On Stamp 0 you must not work, or engage in any business, trade, or profession, unless that is specified in a letter of permission from Immigration Service Delivery.

What Stamp 0 is for
Stamp 0 is the permission an American applies for to retire in Ireland when they have no Irish, European, or British passport. Ireland describes the holder as a person of independent means.
That phrase tells you how it works. You are expected to live on money you already have, not on money you earn in Ireland.

- No work. You must not work, or engage in any business, trade, or profession, unless specified in a letter of permission from Immigration Service Delivery.
- No benefits. You cannot receive any benefits.
- No publicly funded services. The official example is being treated at a public hospital.
The renewal form adds two more conditions. You are not permitted to have a family member join you on the basis of your residence, and you agree to reside in Ireland continuously.
Where your money has to come from
Because you cannot work, the income test looks at what you bring with you. The immigration service says you should have an individual income of €50,000 per year.
- Finances must be pension income or readily accessible funds.
- Investment sums are not normally measured.
- You must also have access to a lump sum of money to cover any sudden major expenses.
Does Stamp 0 lead to something that allows work?
Do not count on it. Stamp 0 does not qualify for Long Term Residency. See Retiring in Ireland: What the Permission Allows for the full picture.
Citizenship is less clear. Naturalization needs 5 years of legal residence in the last 9. The immigration service’s current citizenship guide lists Stamp 0 among the permissions that count, but its page on the stamps says nothing either way. Please confirm that with the immigration service before you plan around it.
If you want to keep working
Look at the family routes first:
- Marriage to an Irish citizen. The spouse of an Irish citizen receives a Stamp 4, which allows work without an employment permit. It is not automatic, and under the family policy the Irish sponsor must have earned at least €75,000 in total over the 3 years before applying.
- An Irish-born grandparent. You may be able to become an Irish citizen by registering on the Foreign Births Register. That costs €278 for an adult and currently takes approximately 12 months. Irish citizens can live in Ireland without any conditions.
In short
- Stamp 0: no work, business, trade, or profession, unless a letter of permission says otherwise.
- No benefits and no publicly funded services.
- Stamp 4, for the spouse of an Irish citizen, does allow work.
Rules change, so read the official page at irishimmigration.ie before you apply.
