Drombeg, or ‘the Druid’s Altar’, is West Cork’s most complete recumbent stone circle — 17 upright stones arranged around a horizontal ‘altar stone’ in use from around 1100-800 BC. The circle aligns with the winter-solstice sunset, when the setting sun drops directly behind two portal stones onto the altar stone (visible on 21 December each year, weather permitting).
The site also includes a Bronze Age hut circle and a fulacht fiadh (cooking pit) with its original stone-lined trough. Free to visit, signposted off the R597 between Rosscarbery and Glandore. Allow 45 minutes. 1 hour 10 minutes from Cork city.
