Newgrange is a monumental Neolithic passage tomb in County Meath’s Boyne Valley, built around 3,200 BC — making it older than the Great Pyramid of Giza and Stonehenge. The circular mound is 85 metres across, faced with a striking wall of white quartz, and surrounded by 97 massive kerbstones carved with megalithic art. Its most famous feature is the 19-metre internal passage that aligns precisely with the rising sun on the winter solstice: for a few minutes on December 21st, a shaft of sunlight illuminates the inner chamber. Tickets are allocated by lottery for the actual solstice; year-round, a simulated sunrise is shown on every guided tour.
Access is via the Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre in Donore — you cannot drive to Newgrange itself. Guided tours only, ~75 minutes, typically combined with a visit to neighbouring Knowth. About 45 minutes’ drive from Dublin, or a day-trip coach tour that usually also takes in the Hill of Tara.
