Youghal (pronounced ‘yawl’) is a medieval walled town on the Blackwater estuary, 45 minutes east of Cork city. Sir Walter Raleigh was mayor here in 1588 and reputedly planted the first potatoes in Ireland in his garden at Myrtle Grove. Parts of the medieval town walls still stand — the longest surviving stretch in Ireland. The 1777 Clock Gate Tower across Main Street is the town’s iconic symbol and offers rooftop tours of the old gaol within.
Youghal doubled for New Bedford, Massachusetts in John Huston’s 1956 Moby Dick adaptation — many of the exterior scenes were filmed on Main Street. The town also has two excellent Blue Flag beaches. Direct bus from Cork, 1 hour.
