Glendalough (‘valley of two lakes’ in Irish) is one of Ireland’s most atmospheric early-Christian sites. Founded by St Kevin in the 6th century, the monastic city grew into a major centre of learning before being sacked by English forces in 1398. What survives is extraordinary: a near-perfect round tower (30 m tall, begun around 1070), the tiny stone oratory known as St Kevin’s Kitchen, the cathedral ruins, and dozens of Celtic high crosses and gravestones.
The site sits in a glacial valley in Wicklow Mountains National Park, with nine signposted hiking trails ranging from a 15-minute wander to the 4-hour Spinc + Glenealo Valley loop over the upper lake. Entry is free; there’s a Visitor Centre near the monastic city with an optional small admission (~€5). About 50 km (1 hour) from Dublin; reachable by car, or on the St Kevin’s Bus service from St Stephen’s Green.
