Elizabeth Fort, built in 1601 and rebuilt in its current pentagonal star-fort shape in the 17th century, sits on a rocky outcrop just south of Cork’s historic city centre. It played a role in the Siege of Cork (1690), served as a military barracks into the 20th century, and housed the Garda Síochána from 1929 to 2013 — after which it was opened to the public.
Entrance is free. You can walk the ramparts for panoramic views of Cork city — St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, the River Lee, and Shandon — and explore the exhibition on the fort’s long history. Allow 45 minutes. 10-minute walk south from the city centre via Barrack Street.
