Not under Irish law. Ireland’s immigration service says you do not have to give up another citizenship to claim Irish citizenship by descent.

That answers the Irish half of the question. The American half has its own official source.

What Ireland says
The Irish position is short and clear. Claiming Irish citizenship through your family does not come with a condition that you give up the citizenship you already have.
So from Ireland’s side, an American who becomes Irish by descent can stay American.

For the American side of that question, check with the United States Department of State.
We only state here what official Irish sources say. Irish government pages do not speak for United States law, and neither do we.
What Irish citizenship adds
If you do become an Irish citizen, here is what you gain:
- You are entitled to apply for an Irish passport.
- You are also a citizen of the European Union.
- You have the right to live and work in Ireland and in the European Union.
- Irish citizens can also live, work, and study in the United Kingdom.
- You can ask Irish embassies for consular help abroad.
One limit to know about: for stays beyond 90 days in another European Union country, conditions such as work, study, or sufficient funds can apply.
Who can claim by descent
A parent born in Ireland who was Irish when you were born makes you a citizen already, and a grandparent born anywhere on the island of Ireland means you can register.
Either way, the dual citizenship answer above is the same.
Before you rely on any of this
Rules change, so check the official pages at ireland.ie before you apply.
When you reach the passport stage, be careful where you apply. The Passport Service warns about third-party websites that charge a fee to help with passport applications. They are not connected with the Department of Foreign Affairs.
The short version
- Irish law: no need to give up another citizenship.
- United States rules: check with the US Department of State.
If the worry about losing your American citizenship has been holding you back from looking into your Irish roots, the Irish rules are not the obstacle. Confirm the American side with the State Department, and then you can decide with both halves in hand.
