Nestled in the breathtaking landscapes of County Clare Bunratty Castle and Folk Park will be the backdrop for this inaugural two-day extravaganza. Steeped in history and culture the castle’s medieval banquet offerings have enchanted visitors for six decades and this celebration couldn’t have come at a more fitting time – coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the iconic Bunratty Castle Medieval Banquet. As an added treat a brand-new exhibition detailing the evolution of the evening entertainment show will also be unveiled.
Collaborating closely with Deirdre O’Brien Vaughan the Director of the Irish Traditional Music Institute this event promises to be a feast for the senses with a diverse range of exhibitions, insightful talks and captivating performances that explore the multifaceted role of the harp in Irish tradition.
Marie Brennan the Events Manager at Bunratty Castle & Folk Park expressed the deep-rooted connection between the Irish harp and the castle’s banquets. With over three million attendees since the 1960s the Irish harp has become synonymous with the lasting memories created within the castle’s walls.
The festivities kick off on Saturday September 2nd at 1:00pm in the banquet hall with a grand opening by the esteemed author and historian Cian O’Carroll. A melodious recital featuring the talents of harpists Aine Sheridan and Kim Fleming alongside a group of emerging harpists will gracefully resonate through the air at 2:00pm. And if that’s not enough to satisfy your musical appetite additional recitals will take place from midday to 4:00pm at Ardcroney Church adding an ethereal touch to the sacred surroundings.
For those who crave knowledge about the craftsmanship behind the harp Gerard Donaghy a renowned harp maker and restorer will deliver an enlightening talk on harp restoration on Sunday September 3rd from 1:00pm to 2:00pm. Following the talk an exhibition will showcase the intricacies of maintaining and preserving these magnificent instruments shedding light on the efforts that go into preserving their soulful melodies.
As the sun sets on this enchanting celebration Patty Gibbons the resident harpist of Dunguaire Castle will transport you through time and space with her segment titled “From Dunmore to Bunratty – A Dream Fulfilled” at 2:00pm on the same day.
