How to Get an Irish PPS Number as an American: The 2026 Step-by-Step Guide

Sharing is caring!

Getting your Irish PPS number is one of the first practical tasks you will complete after arriving in Ireland. The process is straightforward and usually takes less than a week from your appointment date. You apply in person at a local Intreo Centre, bring two or three key documents, and your number arrives by post within two to five working days.

What Is an Irish PPS Number?

A PPS number — Personal Public Service Number — is Ireland’s version of a Social Security number. It is a seven-character code made up of seven digits followed by one or two letters. Once assigned, this number stays with you for life.

You need your PPS number for almost everything official in Ireland:

  • Starting a job or registering as self-employed
  • Opening a full Irish bank account
  • Registering with a GP or accessing hospital services
  • Applying for social welfare payments
  • Completing your Irish tax return with Revenue
  • Buying or renting property in Ireland

Without it, you cannot legally work in Ireland, access public healthcare, or complete many essential administrative tasks. Getting it sorted in your first week is essential.

Who Can Apply for a PPS Number?

Any person with a legitimate need for public services in Ireland can apply, regardless of nationality. That includes Americans who have arrived on a valid Irish visa or permission to remain.

Americans with a work visa or employment permit — If you have been issued a Critical Skills Employment Permit or General Employment Permit, you are entitled to apply immediately on arrival.

Retirees on the Stamp 0 visa — Ireland’s Stamp 0 allows financially independent people to live in Ireland long-term. A PPS number is required for healthcare access, tax compliance, and property transactions.

Remote workers — If you are working remotely for a US employer from an Irish address, you still need a PPS number to comply with Irish tax rules after 183 days in the country. Our guide to the monthly cost of living in Ireland by region is useful reading while you plan your budget.

Family members joining Irish residents — If you are joining a spouse, partner, or parent who is already resident in Ireland, you will need your own separate PPS number.

You cannot apply for a PPS number remotely from the United States. You need a verifiable Irish address and must attend your appointment in person before the Department of Social Protection will process your application.

If you are still in the planning stages of your move, our complete Move to Ireland guide covers every step — from choosing the right visa to setting up your life once you arrive.

What Documents Do You Need to Apply?

Bring the following documents to your Intreo Centre appointment. Missing even one can delay your application by days.

Identity document (required):

  • Valid US passport — a driving licence or state ID is not accepted

Proof of Irish address (one of the following):

  • Utility bill in your name showing your Irish address
  • Bank statement posted to your Irish address
  • Signed letter from your landlord confirming your tenancy, including their contact details
  • Letter from a hotel or hostel confirming you are a current guest — some offices accept this during your first two weeks in the country

Proof of reason for needing a PPS number (one of the following):

  • Signed employment contract or letter from your Irish employer
  • Hospital or GP appointment letter
  • Letter from a solicitor or estate agent if you are buying property
  • Letter from a government department requesting the number for a specific reason

You will also fill in the PPSN1 application form at the office. Staff will provide it at the front desk when you arrive.

How to Apply: Step by Step

Step 1 — Find your local Intreo Centre

Intreo Centres are the Department of Social Protection’s local offices. There are around 60 locations across Ireland. Use the locator at welfare.ie to find the nearest one to your Irish address.

Step 2 — Book your appointment

Most Intreo Centres require an appointment. Book online at welfare.ie or call the office directly. In Dublin city centre, expect a wait of one to two weeks during busy periods. In smaller towns, you may get an appointment within three to five days.

Step 3 — Attend in person

Bring your original documents — not photocopies. The appointment itself usually takes around 15 minutes. Staff check your identity, verify your proof of address, and confirm why you need the number.

Step 4 — Receive your PPS number by post

Your number arrives by post to your Irish address. In most cases, this takes two working days. Allow up to five working days during peak periods such as September, when many new workers and students arrive simultaneously.

Where to Apply Across Ireland

Intreo Centres handle PPS number applications in every county. The main offices in key cities are:

  • Dublin: Parnell Street, Kings Inn Street, and Ballyfermot (multiple offices serving different postcodes)
  • Cork: Sullivan’s Quay, Cork city centre
  • Galway: Galway Retail Park, Headford Road
  • Limerick: Dominic Street, city centre
  • Waterford: The Glen, Waterford city

Apply at the office serving your postal district. Applying at the wrong office can mean your application is redirected, adding days to the process.

How Long Does the Whole Process Take?

Here is a realistic timeline for most American applicants in 2026:

Stage Typical time
Getting an appointment in Dublin 7 to 14 days
Getting an appointment outside Dublin 3 to 7 days
The appointment itself 15 minutes
PPS number issued by post 2 to 5 working days
Total from arrival in Ireland Typically 1 to 3 weeks

If you need your number urgently — for example, to start a job within the next few days — tell the Intreo Centre when booking. Some offices prioritise employment-related applications and can issue a reference letter in the meantime, which many employers accept temporarily.

What Happens After You Get Your PPS Number?

Once you have your PPS number, act on these within your first week:

  • Register with Revenue online at myaccount.revenue.ie using your PPSN — this sets up your tax profile
  • Register with a GP — bring your PPSN and proof of address; most GPs require it
  • Provide it to your employer on or before your first working day
  • Use it to open a full Irish bank account — AIB, Bank of Ireland, and PTSB all require it for residents

Your PPS number is private. You are not required to share it with businesses, private landlords, or any organisation that does not have a specific legal basis for requesting it.

Common Mistakes Americans Make When Applying

Arriving without proof of Irish address. This is the most common reason applications are rejected at the desk. A landlord’s letter must be signed and dated, include the property address, and show the landlord’s contact details.

Bringing photocopies instead of originals. Staff need to see your actual passport, not a scan or photocopy. This is non-negotiable.

Booking the wrong office. Apply at the Intreo Centre that covers your Irish postal district. If you live in Dublin 4, do not book an appointment in Dublin 1.

Forgetting the reason document. The employment letter or hospital appointment letter is not optional. Without a stated reason for needing the number, the application will not proceed.

Assuming you can apply online. As of 2026, PPS number applications for new residents in Ireland require an in-person appointment. There is no fully online process for first-time applicants.

What is an Irish PPS number?

A PPS number (Personal Public Service Number) is Ireland’s national identification number for accessing public services. It is a seven-character code used for employment, healthcare, tax, and social welfare in Ireland. Every person who legally lives or works in Ireland is assigned one.

Can Americans get an Irish PPS number?

Yes. Any person legally resident in Ireland or with a genuine need for Irish public services can apply for a PPS number, regardless of nationality. Americans with a valid Irish visa, employment permit, or residence permission are entitled to apply at their local Intreo Centre.

How long does it take to get a PPS number in Ireland in 2026?

Most applicants receive their PPS number within two to five working days of their Intreo Centre appointment. Booking the appointment itself can take one to two weeks in busy urban areas such as Dublin. The entire process from arrival to receiving your number typically takes one to three weeks.

Do I need a PPS number to open an Irish bank account?

Most Irish banks require a PPS number from residents to open a full current account. Some digital banks such as N26 and Revolut allow you to open a basic account without one, but traditional banks including AIB, Bank of Ireland, and PTSB require it for residents.
