Slane Castle has been home to the Conyngham family since 1703 and owes its dramatic skyline to a 1785 Gothic Revival remodel that drew in architects James Wyatt and Francis Johnston. Since 1981 the natural amphitheatre below the castle has hosted the Slane Concerts — a roll-call that includes U2, Queen, Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, Guns N’ Roses, and Madonna, with crowds of up to 80,000. Outside the concert season you can tour the restored interiors and the on-site Slane Irish Whiskey Distillery, which opened in the castle stables in 2017.
About 45 minutes’ drive from Dublin, or a stop on most Boyne Valley day-tours (often combined with Newgrange). Check the concert calendar before planning — on gig days the estate shuts to regular visitors.
