Trim Castle, perched above the River Boyne in County Meath, is the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland — begun in 1176 by Hugh de Lacy and completed over the next 30 years. Its three-storey keep, with 20 sides and a square footprint, is a rare surviving example of 12th-century military architecture. The castle featured prominently in Mel Gibson’s 1995 film Braveheart, standing in for York, Edinburgh, and London in various scenes.
