Spike Island, a 104-acre fortified island in Cork Harbour, has been continuously fortified for over 1,000 years — from a 6th-century monastery to a 24-sided Napoleonic star fort (Fort Mitchel), and later one of the largest prisons in the world. In the 19th century it held up to 2,300 convicts, many awaiting transportation to Australia; thousands of Famine-era political prisoners passed through here.
The island operated as a prison as recently as 2004. Today it’s a visitor attraction run by Cork County Council — the ferry from Cobh’s Kennedy Pier (15 min crossing) includes a guided tour of Fort Mitchel, the punishment block, and the 1985 prison wing. ‘Europe’s Leading Tourist Attraction 2017’ at the World Travel Awards.
