Saint Fin Barre’s Cathedral, consecrated 1870, is the seat of the Church of Ireland Bishop of Cork. Designed by William Burges in an exuberant French Gothic style, its three spires rise above the southern bank of the River Lee. The interior is staggering — 1,260 carvings, pre-Famine altar brass, mosaic floors, and the ‘Golden Angel’ (a gilded figure said to announce the end of the world on its horn).
Built on the site where St Finbarr founded his 7th-century monastery, the cathedral is the spiritual heart of Cork. Allow 60 minutes. 10-minute walk south of the city centre across the River Lee.
