Who remembers the Castletown Donkey Derby of 1994?

A highly anticipated Donkey Derby in Castletown, County Limerick from 1994 has gone viral on YouTube. The video, which was filmed by the Daly family and uploaded to YouTube for an uncle in Australia, features a then seven-year-old Billy Lee, now a top Irish jockey based in Dubai.

The hilarious scenes captured 25 years ago also feature his sister Jennifer Lee (now trainer) along with special guest commentator Joe O’Brien — former Castletown publican who didn’t even know he would be commentating at the time! Little did they know that their day at the derby would become an international hit viewed by viewers around the globe.

Kevin Daly, who uploaded the video, told The Limerick Post that it was originally just a family affair. “We always got a bit of a laugh out of it when we played it in the family pub and in Joe O’Brien’s in Castletown” he said.

County Limerick sits in Ireland’s southwest. Beside the Shannon Estuary, the city of Limerick is home to the 13th-century King John’s Castle, on an island in the river. Nearby, the Hunt Museum displays a vast collection of art and antiquities in the old customs house. Southeast of here, archaeological sites like the Grange Stone Circle dot the countryside around Lough Gur, in the Ballyhoura Mountains.
