Easter in Ireland 2026: Your Complete Guide to the Long Weekend

Sharing is caring!

Ireland at Easter is something truly special. The island is shaking off the last of winter, the hedgerows are greening, and there is a stillness in the air that you simply cannot find in summer. If you have ever wondered when the best time to visit Ireland might be, Easter weekend is one of the best-kept secrets in Irish tourism.

Easter Sunday fell on 5 April 2026, giving the country a four-day long weekend from Good Friday (3 April) through Easter Monday (6 April) — and by every account it delivered exactly the quiet, unhurried Ireland that regulars know this season for.

Clare’s Inaugural Easter Festival: A Weekend to Remember

For the first time in its history, Clare County Council hosted an inaugural Easter Festival across the county on Saturday 4 April. The centrepiece was a town-wide Easter egg hunt trail through Ennis, marking the completion of the town’s Public Realm Regeneration Project — families followed clues from the O’Connell Monument to landmarks across the freshly restored town centre, collecting stamps along the way, with live music, street performances, and egg decorating running from midday to 6pm. A parade of uilleann pipers led by Blackie O’Connell added extra trad flavour, part of the Piping Heaven / Piping Hell Tionól that ran in Ennis the same weekend.

Clare’s most iconic attractions are also part of the festival:

  • Bunratty Castle and Folk Park — live traditional music, street performers, and the Wobbly Circus on 4 and 5 April (10:30am–5pm).
  • The Cliffs of Moher — never more dramatic than in early spring, when the Atlantic light slants low and golden.
  • Craggaunowen — family-friendly heritage activities throughout the Easter weekend.

A Galway Choir Sang at the Vatican

In a remarkable cultural moment, the choir of St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church in Galway travelled to Rome in the week after Easter, having been invited to sing at St Peter’s Basilica. The 24-voice ensemble performed work by Palestrina at the Altar of the Chair on Thursday 9 April, and also sang at the Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls and the Anglican Church of St Paul’s Within the Walls — what the church’s provost, the Very Reverend Lynda Peilow, called “a rare honour for a Church of Ireland choir to perform in one of the holiest places in Catholicism.”

Traditional Irish Easter: What to Expect

  • Palm Sunday — blessed palm fronds distributed and kept in Irish homes year-round.
  • Good Friday — a quiet day across the country; Stations of the Cross walked outdoors in communities nationwide.
  • Easter Sunday dawn masses — some held outdoors in the tradition of Ireland’s ancient monastic heritage.
  • Simnel cake — rich fruitcake topped with marzipan and 11 marzipan balls.
  • Egg rolling on Easter Monday — still practised in Dublin’s Phoenix Park.

Best Places to Spend Easter in Ireland

  • Killarney, Co. Kerry — the National Park before the summer crowds. Lakes glassy and still, mountains holding the last of the frost. Those who stayed on for the Wander Wild Festival (17–19 April) got an extra weekend of outdoor adventure in the area later in the month.
  • Westport, Co. Mayo — Georgian architecture, excellent restaurants, and Croagh Patrick on the horizon.
  • Kilkenny City — medieval, walkable, and gorgeous on an Easter Sunday morning.
  • The Aran Islands — hauntingly quiet at Easter, with stone walls and Atlantic wind giving you Ireland’s ancient soul.

Ireland at Easter is patient, generous, and unhurried. There are no queues. There are no crowds. There is just the island, the light, and the quiet hum of a country that has been celebrating this season for over a thousand years.
