Ireland at Easter is something truly special. The island is shaking off the last of winter, the hedgerows are greening, and there is a stillness in the air that you simply cannot find in summer. If you have ever wondered when the best time to visit Ireland might be, Easter weekend is one of the best-kept secrets in Irish tourism.
This year, with Easter Sunday falling on 5 April 2026, the long weekend stretches from Good Friday (3 April) all the way through Easter Monday (6 April) — four full days to explore Ireland at its most serene.

Clare’s Inaugural Easter Festival: A Weekend to Remember
For the first time in its history, Clare County Council is hosting an inaugural Easter Festival across the county this weekend. The centrepiece is a town-wide Easter egg hunt through Ennis, celebrating the completion of the town’s Public Realm Regeneration Project. Families can follow a trail of clues to landmarks across the freshly restored town centre, with live music, street performances, and egg decorating from midday to 6pm.
Clare’s most iconic attractions are also part of the festival:
- Bunratty Castle and Folk Park — live traditional music, street performers, and the Wobbly Circus on 4 and 5 April (10:30am–5pm).
- The Cliffs of Moher — never more dramatic than in early spring, when the Atlantic light slants low and golden.
- Craggaunowen — family-friendly heritage activities throughout the Easter weekend.
A Galway Choir Heads to the Vatican
In a remarkable cultural moment, the choir of St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church in Galway has been invited to sing at St Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The 24-voice ensemble will perform work by Palestrina at the Altar of the Chair on 9 April — what the church’s provost describes as “a rare honour for a Church of Ireland choir.”
Traditional Irish Easter: What to Expect
- Palm Sunday — blessed palm fronds distributed and kept in Irish homes year-round.
- Good Friday — a quiet day across the country; Stations of the Cross walked outdoors in communities nationwide.
- Easter Sunday dawn masses — some held outdoors in the tradition of Ireland’s ancient monastic heritage.
- Simnel cake — rich fruitcake topped with marzipan and 11 marzipan balls.
- Egg rolling on Easter Monday — still practised in Dublin’s Phoenix Park.
Best Places to Spend Easter in Ireland
- Killarney, Co. Kerry — the National Park before the summer crowds. Lakes glassy and still, mountains holding the last of the frost. If you’re visiting in mid-April, the Wander Wild Festival (17–19 April) is an unmissable outdoor adventure weekend.
- Westport, Co. Mayo — Georgian architecture, excellent restaurants, and Croagh Patrick on the horizon.
- Kilkenny City — medieval, walkable, and gorgeous on an Easter Sunday morning.
- The Aran Islands — hauntingly quiet at Easter, with stone walls and Atlantic wind giving you Ireland’s ancient soul.
Ireland at Easter is patient, generous, and unhurried. There are no queues. There are no crowds. There is just the island, the light, and the quiet hum of a country that has been celebrating this season for over a thousand years.
