Trim Castle, perched above the River Boyne in County Meath, is the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland — begun in 1176 by Hugh de Lacy and completed over the next 30 years. Its three-storey keep, with 20 sides and a square footprint, is a rare surviving example of 12th-century military architecture. The castle featured prominently in Mel Gibson’s 1995 film Braveheart, standing in for York, Edinburgh, and London in various scenes.
Guided tours of the keep run several times a day and last about 45 minutes — the only way to access the interior. The surrounding grounds and curtain walls are free to explore. About 50 km (45 min) from Dublin; combine with Newgrange and the Hill of Tara for a full Boyne Valley day out.
