What happens at the airport
As a United States citizen, you do not need a visa to travel to Ireland. Permission to enter is given when you land, by an immigration officer.
- The maximum for a visitor is 3 months.
- The officer can give you a shorter period.
- The officer can refuse entry.
Entry is always at the discretion of the immigration officer.
Staying longer than 90 days
To live in Ireland for more than 90 days, you need a permission to remain, and you must register it.
Here is the part that catches people out. In most cases, you cannot change your reason for being in Ireland after you have entered. A visit stays a visit.
If your plan is to retire there
For an American retiree with no Irish, European, or British passport, the permission is called Stamp 0. The immigration service is clear that all applicants must apply for Stamp 0 before arriving in Ireland.
So you cannot arrive as a visitor and then apply. And being let in as a visitor does not mean your retirement application will succeed.
The order goes like this:
- Apply by mail, before arriving. Processing typically takes 4 to 6 months.
- Receive your approval letter.
- Travel to Ireland. Because Americans do not need a visa, you can travel with that letter.
- Register within 90 days. You get a landing stamp of up to 90 days when you arrive, and you must register your permission within that time.
Three things to know while you are visiting
- Healthcare. While you are only visiting, Americans have no entitlement to free or subsidized health services.
- Property. You can buy a home in Ireland even if you do not live there, but owning a property does not automatically give you the right to live in Ireland.
- Tax. Ireland’s Revenue service counts days. You will not be resident in Ireland for tax purposes if you are there for 30 days or less in a tax year, and you are resident if you are present for 183 days or more. Any part of a day counts as a day.
In short
- No visa needed to land.
- Up to 3 months as a visitor, possibly less, at the officer’s discretion.
- More than 90 days needs a permission to remain, which you must register.
- A retirement permission must be applied for before you arrive.
Rules change, so read the official pages before you travel.
