Best Gardens to See Autumn Colours in Ireland This Month

Most visitors picture Ireland in shades of endless green, but October tells a different story. Right now, the country’s heritage gardens are putting on one of the year’s most spectacular — and most overlooked — shows. These aren’t accidental patches of colour: generations of garden-makers planted maples, oaks and liquidambars specifically for their autumn fire. Here are six of the best places to see it.

1. Mount Usher Gardens, Co. Wicklow

Twice named Ireland’s best garden by BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine, Mount Usher was laid out from the 1860s by the influential gardener William Robinson along the tumbling River Vartry. Its wild, informal planting style gives the autumn colour room to breathe, with maples and specimen trees reflected in the water.

2. Kilmacurragh, Co. Wicklow

A short drive from Mount Usher, this 19th-century outstation of Dublin’s National Botanic Gardens is known for its conifers and rhododendrons — and for a wide collection of trees that turn a deep, glowing rust and gold through October and into November.

3. Powerscourt Estate Gardens, Co. Wicklow

Best known for its Italianate terraces beneath the Great Sugar Loaf, Powerscourt also hides a Japanese Garden where Japanese maples blaze red and orange beside the estate’s waterfall. See our guide to Ireland’s best gardens for more on the terraces and grounds, or read about the night the great house itself burned down in 1974.

4. Birr Castle Demesne, Co. Offaly

Cultivated by the Parsons family since the 17th century, Birr Castle’s grounds hold dozens of Ireland’s tallest and oldest “Champion Trees”. In autumn their ancient canopy turns a vivid patchwork of bronze, copper and gold above the Camcor and Little Brosna rivers.

5. Mount Stewart, Co. Down

On the shores of Strangford Lough, Mount Stewart’s Japanese maples, American sweetgums and red maples turn the garden scarlet, copper and gold — a display the Irish News has singled out among its own pick of gardens for autumn colour.

6. Mount Congreve, Co. Waterford

Home to one of the largest plant collections in the world, Mount Congreve’s woodland walks along the River Suir are quieter than the bigger-name gardens — and just as striking once its maples and liquidambars turn.

The window is brief. Peak colour lasts roughly a fortnight before the Atlantic winds strip the branches bare. If you’re travelling to Ireland in late October or early November, a garden visit slots perfectly into a morning before the weather turns — and offers something most visitors never think to seek out.
