About Clonakilty
In Clonakilty Ireland’s singular Model Village stands as a source of delight for individuals of every age.

This intricate creation embodies a scaled representation of the historical West Cork Railway Line replete with functional miniature trains and the settlements that were served by the railway during the 1940s.
Painstakingly handcrafted miniature structures and figurines narrate the tale of past lifestyles and livelihoods. Scenes include bustling open-air market days, stately castles, matrimonial celebrations and schoolchildren engaged in play within the schoolyard.
Visitors are invited to trace the path of the model trains through the expanse of West Cork, navigate remote control boats, operate mini excavators and enjoy the lively outdoor play area. The Village Cafe caters to guests with an array of teas, coffees and snacks.

In regard to its origins the idea for a Model Village was conceived in 1985 by members of the West Cork Heritage Group. Key proponents included Mr. William Houlihan (Architect) Mr. Dan O’Donovan and the late Mr. James Blewitt. The principal aim of the project was to offer an enriching educational and visual experience for both locals and tourists while also contributing to employment opportunities in Clonakilty.
An adept and dedicated team of artisans embarked on the journey to shape the Model Village into its current form. Development transpired in phases with Clonakilty being the first town to be completed. The Model Village was formally inaugurated in 1994 with the honor of opening bestowed upon then President Mary Robinson.
Over the years the towns of Bandon, Kinsale and Dunmanway were subsequently added to the evolving tableau.
The introduction of the Road Train offering tours of Clonakilty commenced in 2004 followed by the incorporation of Remote Control Boats and mini excavators in recent years.
From its modest inception the Model Village has captivated multitudes of visitors hailing from diverse corners of the globe. As the enterprise approaches its 30th anniversary in 2024 it stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of its intricate craftsmanship and immersive experiences.
