Belfast Fleadh 2026: the practical details

Belfast is about to become the epicentre of traditional Irish music, and we think this could be one of the best reasons to book a trip north this year.

With 800,000 visitors expected over the eight days from Sunday 2 August to Sunday 9 August 2026, Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann transforms its host city into a living, breathing celebration of Irish culture. Competitions run all day. Sessions spill from pubs onto streets. The atmosphere is electric and entirely authentic — this isn’t a performance staged for tourists, it’s the real heartbeat of Irish trad.

Is it free?

Mostly, yes. Street performances, pub sessions and most of the outdoor programme cost nothing — no booking required. The free Gig Rig at Belfast City Hall runs music throughout the festival. A number of ticketed concerts and competitions take place at Waterfront Hall, Ulster Hall and ICC Belfast, and some competition sessions require a free wristband available at the venue, so it’s worth checking the official Fleadh Cheoil programme before you travel.

Where to go

For anyone planning an Ireland trip, timing your visit around the Fleadh means you’ll experience traditional music the way it’s meant to be heard: spontaneous, social, and everywhere. If you want a proper session in a historic room, the Crown Bar is a short walk from the main festival hub and gets especially lively during Fleadh week. Belfast also gives you easy access to the Causeway Coast — see our guide to Ireland’s best coastal drives for planning a day trip north — plus the Titanic Quarter and some seriously good food.

Getting there

Belfast city centre gets busy during the Fleadh, so organisers recommend public transport, walking or cycling rather than driving in. Four Park and Ride sites — at Eikon Exhibition Centre, Sprucefield, Giant’s Park and Belfast Harbour Estate — run free shuttle buses into the city centre for a flat £10 a day of parking, and Translink is adding bus specials to Belfast from towns including Derry~Londonderry, Armagh and Omagh. Book Park and Ride spaces in advance at fleadhcheoil.ie/travel.

We’d recommend booking accommodation early — 800,000 people don’t lie about demand.
