What is Birr Castle famous for?
Birr Castle isn’t just famous for its history; it’s also known for its impressive gardens. The grounds boast a wide variety of rare species, including over 2000 types of trees, shrubs and plants.
Visitors can explore the grounds and see for themselves why Birr Castle has been recognized as a National Heritage Garden. Along with its stunning gardens, the castle also houses one of Ireland’s oldest scientific instruments—the Great Telescope of Lord Rosse. Built in the mid-1800s, this gigantic telescope was used to observe stars and planets and helped push the boundaries of astronomical knowledge.
