The National Gallery of Ireland just became an even stronger reason to visit Dublin this winter. A major Hilma af Klint exhibition, Hilma af Klint: Artist and Visionary, opens this week (15 October), showcasing the Swedish pioneer who was creating abstract art before anyone else dared.
For those planning an Ireland trip between now and early February 2027, this is worth building into your Dublin itinerary. The National Gallery sits on Merrion Square — one of the city’s most elegant Georgian squares — and while general admission to the permanent collection is always free, this special exhibition is ticketed (up to €16, with under-18s and Gallery Friends admitted free). You could spend a morning with Hilma af Klint’s extraordinary paintings, then walk to nearby Government Buildings or St Stephen’s Green.
Winter travel to Ireland often means pivoting indoors, and Dublin delivers. World-class art, warm cafés, and that particular Irish welcome make the shorter days worthwhile. We’d recommend booking accommodation in the city centre to keep the gallery within easy reach.
This one runs through 7 February 2027 — plenty of time to plan, though booking a ticket ahead is worth it. If exhibitions are your thing, Dublin also has free Yeats exhibition tours at the National Library running this October.
