How a Blackthorn Shillelagh is made from start to finish

The process of making a Blackthorn Shillelagh begins with harvesting a blackthorn tree from the wild or from another source. The ideal wood for a shillelagh is blackthorn, as it’s light yet strong and dense.

Once the harvested wood has been collected, it must be properly cured by soaking it in water for a few days and then drying it to help prevent warping.

The next step is to shape the wood into the desired shape. This can be done with various tools such as chisels, planes, rasps and files. The shillelagh should have a handle that’s comfortable to grip, a tapered shaft and a round knob at one end.

Once the shillelagh is shaped, it needs to be sanded smooth with increasingly finer grits of sandpaper until it’s completely smooth. Then, it can be stained or painted in whatever color desired.

The last step is to finish the shillelagh with a protective coat of wax or oil to help it last longer and protect it from moisture. This process can also add a nice shine to the wood if desired.

Once finished, the Blackthorn Shillelagh is ready to use! It’s an ideal choice for self-defense or just a nice piece of decor for your home. With the right care, it can last for years and be passed down through generations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is blackthorn wood the best choice for a shillelagh?

Blackthorn is ideal because it’s light yet strong and dense, making it durable enough for long-term use whether for self-defense or display. Its natural properties ensure a well-balanced, long-lasting stick.

Why do you soak blackthorn wood in water when making a shillelagh?

Soaking the freshly harvested wood for a few days, followed by proper drying, prevents the wood from warping as it cures. This critical step keeps your finished shillelagh straight and structurally sound.

What tools are used to shape a blackthorn shillelagh?

Craftspeople use chisels, planes, rasps, and files to carve the wood into shape, creating a comfortable handle, tapered shaft, and distinctive round knob at the end. Each tool allows for precise refinement at different stages.

Why finish a shillelagh with wax or oil?

A protective coating shields the wood from moisture and extends the life of your shillelagh significantly. The finish also adds a natural shine that enhances the wood’s appearance.
