Usually not. A great-grandparent born in Ireland is usually not enough, because official guidance says you have no automatic right to citizenship through ancestors further back than your grandparents.

There is one usual way it can still work, and it depends on your parent.

Where the line falls
Irish citizenship by descent starts with one question: who in your family was born on the island of Ireland?
A parent born in Ireland who was Irish when you were born makes you a citizen already, and a grandparent born on the island lets you register. One generation further back, the answer changes.
The same limit applies to other relatives. An Irish aunt, uncle, or cousin does not give you a claim either.
The usual way it can still work
If your parent was already on the Foreign Births Register before you were born, then your parent was an Irish citizen at your birth, and you can register too.
The key word is before.
- Parent registered before you were born: you can register.
- Parent registered after you were born: usually no.
- Parent never registered: usually no.
Why registering now does not help you
People often hope a parent can register today and open the door for them. It does not work that way. If your parent registers today, that does not reach back to cover you.
The reason is timing. For someone who registers, citizenship begins on the date of registration, not on the date they were born. So a parent who registers now was not an Irish citizen when you were born.
If that is your situation
If your closest Irish-born ancestor is a great-grandparent, and your parent was not registered before your birth, for most families this route is closed.
A few older or unusual cases are different, and the Department of Foreign Affairs can confirm yours. If you think your family may be one of them, ask the Department before you rule it out.
The Irish associations application
There is a separate application based on Irish associations. It is a different thing from registering through a grandparent.
- It is decided at the discretion of the Minister.
- Those cases are taking more than 30 months.
- There is no guarantee.
Nobody should promise you a passport that way.
The honest summary
A great-grandparent usually only works if your parent was registered before you were born. If that did not happen, it is better to know now than after months of gathering family papers.
