Ross Castle is a 15th-century tower house on the shore of Lough Leane, about 3 km from Killarney town in County Kerry. You can visit it on a guided tour in the main season, and the grounds are free to walk. It is one of the easiest castles in Ireland to reach from a town centre, and one of the best placed.

This guide explains the history of Ross Castle, what a visit involves and how to reach it. It also covers the boat trips and walks nearby. If you are still shaping your route, start with our Ireland trip planning hub.
A Short History of Ross Castle
The O’Donoghue Ross clan are traditionally credited with building the castle in the 15th century. It later passed to the MacCarthy Mor family and then to the Browne family, who became the Earls of Kenmare. The Brownes held the Killarney estate for centuries.
The castle has a famous place in the wars of the 1650s. It was one of the last strongholds in Munster to hold out against Cromwellian forces. Local tradition says the defenders believed it could only fall if a warship sailed on the lake. Boats were hauled to the shore, and the garrison surrendered in 1652. Historians treat the prophecy as legend, but the surrender is well recorded. Read the full story of the siege and the prophecy in our guide to the castle that never fell.
What Ross Castle Looks Like
The main keep is a square tower with several floors. A walled yard called a bawn surrounds it, and two corner towers still stand. Inside, the rooms are furnished in the style of a 16th- and 17th-century chieftain’s home.
The setting is the real draw. Lough Leane is the largest of the three Killarney lakes, and the mountains rise behind the water. In still weather, the tower reflects in the lake. That is the view in our header photograph, taken under a clear night sky.

1. Take the guided castle tour
The castle is run by the Office of Public Works as part of Heritage Ireland. Visits are by guided tour only, and tour times change by season. Check the official Heritage Ireland page for Ross Castle before you travel. Tours are short, so most visitors combine them with a lakeside walk.
2. Take a boat trip on Lough Leane
Boat trips leave from the pier beside the castle. A popular route runs out to Innisfallen Island. Monks founded a monastery there around 640 AD, in the 7th century, and its ruins still stand among the trees. Operators and sailing times change through the year, so confirm them locally.
3. Walk the lakeshore and Ross Island
A flat path leads from the castle car park along the shore. Ross Island is a peninsula beside the castle. It holds some of the oldest copper mining remains in Ireland, dating back more than 4,000 years. The loop is easy and suits most walkers.
4. Ride a jaunting car from Killarney
Horse-drawn jaunting cars run from Killarney town to the castle. The ride is a classic Killarney experience. It is also a good option if you do not want to walk the 3 km from town.
