If you have stood at the Cliffs of Moher on the right morning, you may have seen something that looks almost impossible. A band of white mist drifts along the cliff face — several metres below where you are standing — while the sky above is completely clear. The sea is visible in the distance, the sun is out, and yet there is this dense white layer floating halfway down the rock.

This is not unusual, and it is not dangerous. It is a specific weather phenomenon that happens on Ireland’s west coast, and once you understand what causes it, you will know exactly when to look for it — and where to stand.
The Cliffs of Moher stretch for about 14 kilometres along the coast of County Clare. They reach up to 214 metres at their highest point near O’Brien’s Tower. Around 1.5 million people visit each year. Most arrive on ordinary afternoons and see the standard view. Far fewer catch the mist.
What Causes Mist to Float Below the Clifftop?
The short answer is a combination of orographic lift and temperature inversion.
Ireland’s west coast sits directly in the path of Atlantic airflow. The air arrives moist and relatively warm off the ocean. When it strikes the cliff face, it is forced rapidly upward. As air rises, it cools at a rate of roughly 0.65°C per 100 metres. At a certain altitude — typically somewhere between 50 and 180 metres above sea level — the temperature drops below the dew point. That is when water vapour in the air condenses into tiny droplets, forming a visible cloud or mist layer.
If the atmosphere above that level is warmer and drier (what meteorologists call a temperature inversion), the mist does not rise further. It stays fixed in a band — below the clifftop, above the base. From where you are standing at the top of the cliffs, you are above the cloud. You look down at a white layer with open sea and clear sky stretching beyond it.
The technical term is orographic fog — fog or mist caused by terrain forcing air upward. The Cliffs of Moher, dropping nearly vertically into the Atlantic, create exactly the right conditions for this to happen on a regular basis. It’s a distinct phenomenon from the thicker Atlantic sea fog that sometimes blankets the whole clifftop — that kind rolls in off the ocean and covers everything, while the mist band described here sits fixed below a clear sky.
When Is It Most Likely to Happen?
The mist band is most common under a specific set of conditions:
- Early morning, not afternoon. The phenomenon typically forms overnight or in the hours around sunrise, when sea temperatures are relatively warm compared to cooling land air. Rising temperatures through the morning usually break it up by 10 or 11am.
- After a calm night. Light overnight winds allow stable mist to form and hold its position. Strong winds mix the air layers and prevent the distinct band from developing.
- Autumn and spring. The greatest contrast between sea temperature and air temperature occurs in the transition seasons. Late September through November and March through May are the most reliable windows.
- On otherwise clear days. The mist band is most dramatic and most visible when the sky above is completely clear. Total overcast conditions hide the contrast. You are looking for a sharp boundary between clear blue sky and a white band partway down the rock.
Summer is less reliable for this particular effect. Sea and air temperatures run closer together, reducing the conditions needed for localised mist formation at mid-cliff height. Winter can produce it, but the clifftop itself is often misted over from top to bottom in December and January, which removes the contrast you are looking for.

Where to See It Best
Not all viewpoints along the cliffs give you the same angle on the mist phenomenon. The band is most visible when you are looking along the cliff face rather than straight out to sea.
O’Brien’s Tower area is the highest accessible point on the cliffs at around 214 metres. Standing here on a mist morning gives you a clear line of sight down to where the cloud layer sits against the rock face to the south. This is the most commonly photographed angle.
The northern coastal path towards Doolin is the realistic alternative to O’Brien’s Tower for a side-on view. The southern stretch towards Hag’s Head has been closed for safety works since 2026 with no confirmed reopening date, so it isn’t a usable vantage point right now. From the open section of path north of the visitor centre, as far as Surfers Path, you get a side-on view of the mist band against the cliffs to the south — and a quieter vantage point than O’Brien’s Tower.
The Doolin boat trip is the most dramatic perspective of all. Several operators run morning trips from Doolin Pier. From the water, you see the mist floating at cliff height above you, with the rock face rising out of it. It is a completely different experience to looking down from the top, and often the one that produces the most striking photographs.
If you are planning a visit specifically to catch the mist, aim to arrive at the cliffs by 8:00 or 8:30am. The main visitor centre and car park open at 8:00am for most of the year (March through October), moving to 9:00am from November through February — check the current time before you go, and note that the coastal path itself is accessible before the centre opens. You can park at the main car park and walk along the top path before the bulk of visitors arrive.
Practical Tips for Visiting in Mist Conditions
Dress for a range of temperatures. At 214 metres, the clifftop can be 5–8°C colder than Doolin village below, even on a warm morning. Bring a waterproof layer regardless of what the forecast says at sea level. Wind is the variable that catches most visitors out — it can be completely still down in the village and quite strong at the top.
Stay on the marked path. The cliff edge is unfenced in many sections, and mist conditions reduce visibility. The barriers exist because the rock at the edge is uneven and not always stable. Stay on the path side of any barrier.
Check sunrise time before you go. The light on a mist morning changes quickly in the first hour after sunrise. If you want photographs with good light — the low sun catching the mist against the dark rock — you need to be in position before the sun gets too high. On an autumn morning this might mean arriving by 7:30am.
Walk the coastal path, not just the platform. The full Cliffs of Moher Coastal Walk normally runs about 14 kilometres from Doolin to Hag’s Head, but as of 2026 the southern stretch (Liscannor/Hag’s Head) is closed for safety works. What’s reliably open is the loop around the visitor centre and the path north towards Doolin as far as Surfers Path — still enough distance to get significantly better angles on the cliff face than the main viewing platform alone.
Use a weather app that shows dew point. The Weather Channel and Windy.com both display dew point data. A dew point within 3°C of the overnight low temperature, combined with light winds and clear skies forecast for morning, is a reliable indicator that mist conditions are possible.

What the Locals Know
People who live near the cliffs in County Clare have watched this mist for generations. To a first-time visitor, the mist band looks dramatic and unusual. To someone who grew up here, it is often a reliable indicator of good weather to come later in the day.
The logic is straightforward. When mist forms below the clifftop on an otherwise clear morning, the air above is already stable and dry. That is the type of atmosphere associated with settled, fair conditions. If the entire cliff is shrouded from top to bottom in thick cloud, that is a different situation entirely — usually a front moving in from the west.
Old Clare weather wisdom says something close to: “Mist on the cliff face, sun by midday.” It is not a guaranteed forecast, but it is consistent with the science. Once the land warms enough to break the temperature inversion, the mist lifts off the rock and the day usually follows through with good conditions.
The other thing locals know is that many days at the Cliffs of Moher have more going on than a quick scan from the viewing platform reveals. The seabirds — puffins between April and July, razorbills and guillemots most of the year — are most visible from the cliff edges in the early morning, before boat traffic and visitor noise picks up. The mist mornings coincide with exactly the right time of day.
Getting to the Cliffs of Moher
The Cliffs of Moher are located off the R478 road, about 8 kilometres south of Doolin and around 5 kilometres north of Liscannor in County Clare.
By car from Galway: Take the N18 south, then the R460 via Kinvara toward Ballyvaughan. Continue south through the Burren on the R480 and R477 to Doolin, then follow the R478 south to the cliffs. Allow approximately 1 hour 15 minutes.
By car from Ennis: Take the N85 west toward Ennistymon, then join the R482 and R479 toward Liscannor. The cliffs are well signposted from Liscannor. Allow 45–50 minutes.
By public transport: Bus Éireann operates routes into Doolin, from which the cliffs are approximately a 20-minute walk along the coastal path. Several tour operators also run day trips from Galway, Ennis, and Limerick.
Entry to the main visitor centre includes car parking. Adult admission booked online in advance currently runs from around €8 (off-peak) to €12 (peak hours, 11am–4pm), rising to €15 if you pay at the gate on the day. The cliff path itself is free to access from multiple points along the R478. If you are arriving early for the mist, the path is accessible before the centre opens.
A Reason to Come Back
The mist phenomenon is one of the things that makes the Cliffs of Moher different from most visitor attractions in Europe. You cannot schedule it, engineer it, or guarantee it on any given day. It depends entirely on weather conditions and season.
That is partly what makes it worth going back to see. Many people visit once and get the standard view on a clear afternoon. But the early-morning mist band — when cloud sits halfway down the cliff face and the Atlantic stretches clear beyond it, and there is barely anyone else on the path — takes either luck or planning.
The mist that rolls in off the ocean is not a modern curiosity. It is part of how this coastline works, and it has been happening here as long as the cliffs have stood. Most visitors just drive in after breakfast and miss it.
