Every year on St Patrick’s Day, something extraordinary happens. Landmarks across the globe — from skyscrapers to ancient monuments, from waterfalls to ski jumps — turn green in honour of Ireland. It is called the Global Greening, and in 2026 it is bigger than ever.
Tourism Ireland’s flagship initiative has become one of the most recognisable St Patrick’s Day traditions in the world. This year, iconic sites in more than eight countries are bathed in green light to celebrate Ireland’s national day.
The Landmarks Going Green in 2026
The list reads like a bucket list of world wonders. In New York, the Empire State Building glows green above Manhattan’s skyline. Across the border in Canada, both Niagara Falls and the CN Tower join the celebration.
In Europe, the Leaning Tower of Pisa turns emerald green — one of Italy’s most photographed monuments honouring Ireland’s patron saint. Scotland’s National Wallace Monument, the Grand Place in Brussels, the Cibeles Fountain in Madrid, La Croisette in Cannes, and the Heidecksburg Castle in Germany all follow suit.
Two quirky new additions join the roster for 2026: Denmark’s Jelling Stones — Viking Age rune stones dating from the 10th century — and Austria’s Bergisel Ski Jump in Innsbruck. Meanwhile, the Sky Tower in Auckland ensures the Southern Hemisphere is well represented.
Why the World Turns Green for Ireland
Alice Mansergh, CEO of Tourism Ireland, put it simply: “St Patrick’s Day puts Ireland in the global spotlight and our Global Greening initiative is a wonderful symbol of the deep connections we share around the world.”
Those connections run deep. Between 70 and 80 million people worldwide claim Irish heritage. For the diaspora scattered across every continent, the 17th of March is the one day when that identity rises to the surface — louder, greener, and prouder than usual.
The numbers behind the campaign are staggering: a media reach of 350 million through over 2,500 coverage pieces, 7.5 million social media followers engaged, and a hero video reaching 30 million viewers worldwide.
Ireland Itself Celebrates
While the world turns green, Ireland celebrates in its own quieter, more genuine way. The national St Patrick’s Day parade winds through Dublin from Parnell Square to Cuffe Street, with television personality Vogue Williams leading as Grand Marshal. Cork, Galway, and towns across the country hold their own parades — each one a window into the warmth and creativity that makes Irish culture so beloved.
Whether you are watching the Empire State Building glow green from a New York rooftop or listening to fiddles warm up in a Dublin pub at half nine in the morning — today is a reminder that Ireland’s reach extends far beyond its shores. Happy St Patrick’s Day. ☘️
