We put one question to our Love Ireland community — what pairs best with soda bread, fresh from the oven? — and the reply came back fast, loud, and almost unanimous. Hundreds of answers rolled in — and if you had to bet on the single most-repeated word, you would win your money back and then some.

Butter. Not a scrape of it. A proper, thick, melting layer of it, ideally Irish butter, with Kerrygold named again and again as the standard everyone measures against. “A pound of butter” came up so often it stopped being a joke and started being a genuine instruction. More than one person insisted on real country butter, still cold enough to leave ridges where the knife pulls through.
After butter, the pairings split into a few clear camps. A strong contingent wanted a cup of tea alongside it — Barry’s by name, more than once — while others held out for coffee or, on a cold morning, a bowl of soup to dip it in. Smoked salmon and cream cheese showed up as the more indulgent choice, alongside jam in every flavour from blackberry to gooseberry to rhubarb. A few went further still: a fried egg, a full Irish breakfast, or — only half-joking — a pint of Guinness.
One reply summed up the whole thread better than we could: “Trick question. Answer: anything and everything.” Another, from someone remembering their grandmother’s kitchen, put it simply — butter, a cup of tea with milk and sugar, and the people you shared it with.
If there is a lesson in hundreds of replies to one simple question, it might be this: soda bread was never really the point. It is the excuse for butter, tea, and a few minutes at the table with someone you like.
