West Cork Ireland: Best Coastal Walks, Islands and Seafood on the Wild Atlantic Way

If you’re planning an Ireland trip and debating between the Ring of Kerry or the Cliffs of Moher, consider a third option that often gets overlooked: West Cork.

This corner of Ireland delivers everything visitors hope to find — rugged coastal paths, fresh-off-the-boat seafood, and island escapes — without the tour bus traffic that crowds more famous routes. The walking here ranges from gentle harbour strolls in Kinsale to proper coastal hikes around Sheep’s Head and the Beara Peninsula.

We think West Cork works best as a dedicated stop rather than a drive-through. Give it three or four nights. Base yourself in Bantry or Clonakilty, then day-trip to Baltimore — the departure point for ferries to Cape Clear and Sherkin Island, with a seasonal summer service also from Schull — and let the pace slow down. The seafood chowder alone justifies the detour.

For anyone building a Wild Atlantic Way itinerary, West Cork is the stretch where the crowds thin and the coastline gets genuinely wild.
