Classic Irish Shepherd’s Pie Recipe (Traditional Method)

Shepherd’s Pie is a beloved traditional Irish dish, perfect for sharing with family and friends. Classic Irish Shepherd’s Pie Recipe

Ingredient Metric Imperial
Minced lamb 500g 1 lb
Onion, finely chopped 1 medium 1 medium
Carrots, diced 2 medium 2 medium
Peas 100g 3.5 oz
Garlic cloves, minced 2 2
Beef or lamb stock 250ml 1 cup
Tomato purée 1 tbsp 1 tbsp
Worcestershire sauce 1 tbsp 1 tbsp
Potatoes, peeled and chopped 900g 2 lb
Butter 50g 3.5 tbsp
Milk 100ml 3.5 fl oz
Salt and pepper to taste to taste

Method

  1. Boil the potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and mash with butter and milk until smooth. Season with salt and pepper.
  2. In a large pan, sauté the onion, carrots, and garlic until softened.
  3. Add the minced lamb and cook until browned.
  4. Stir in the tomato purée, Worcestershire sauce, and stock. Simmer for 15 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.
  5. Add the peas and cook for a further 5 minutes.
  6. Transfer the meat mixture to a baking dish and spread the mashed potatoes evenly on top.
  7. Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C (400°F) for 20-25 minutes until the top is golden and crisp.
  8. Allow to rest for a few minutes before serving.

Can You Freeze Classic Irish Shepherd’s Pie?

Yes, Shepherd’s Pie freezes very well. Allow it to cool completely, then cover tightly with foil or place in a freezer-safe container. Freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge and reheat in the oven until piping hot.

Why Is My Shepherd’s Pie Watery?

This can happen if the filling is too wet or the potatoes contain too much moisture. To avoid this, drain the cooked vegetables well and use starchy potatoes for the mash. Also, simmer the meat mixture until it thickens before assembling the pie.

No!!! I climbed up with every intention of kissing the Blarney Stone, but when I looked at those wee bars that you had to lie backwards on, I just KNEW that this would be the time that they finally decided to break! And it is a LONG way down!!!
