Real Irish Soda Bread

Traditional Irish Soda Bread Recipe

Ingredient Metric Imperial / Cups
All-purpose flour 450 g 3 ½ cups
Baking soda 1 tsp 1 tsp
Salt 1 tsp 1 tsp
Buttermilk 400 ml 1 ⅔ cups

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 220°C (425°F). Lightly grease a baking tray or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Make a well in the centre and pour in the buttermilk. Using your hand or a wooden spoon, mix quickly to form a soft dough. Do not overwork the dough.
  4. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and gently shape it into a round loaf.
  5. Place the loaf on the prepared baking tray. Using a sharp knife, cut a deep cross on the top of the dough. This traditional cross helps the bread cook evenly.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  7. Remove from the oven and cool on a wire rack. Serve warm with plenty of Kerrygold Irish butter.

Key takeaway: Do not over-knead your dough to keep the bread light and tender.
