How was Carlow Castle destroyed?

How was Carlow Castle destroyed? – In 1813, the Carlow Castle in Ireland was leased to Dr. Phillip Parry Price Middleton who set out to convert it into a mental asylum. Unfortunately, destruction came calling in 1814 when an explosion caused part of the structure to collapse, leading to its abandonment.

History of Carlow Castle

Carlow Castle has stood proudly in the Irish town of Carlow since 1207. Its commanding presence, grandeur, and beauty have long been a source of pride for locals throughout its 700-year history.

The castle was founded by William Marshall, Earl of Striguil who also constructed the nearby St Mary’s Church of Ireland. The castle was of strategic importance due to its location on the River Barrow and the defences that could be created by the river itself.

The castle experienced many tumultuous events throughout its time. In 1798, the Battle of Carlow between British forces and Irish rebels took place nearby, with government troops occupying the castle during this time.

No matter what its turbulent past may have been, Carlow Castle will always remain a symbol of pride for locals and visitors alike. Its powerful presence will continue to inspire the minds of many for generations to come.

How to get to Carlow Castle
