Unusually for an Irish tower house, it’s a large, fortified courtyard enclosure – roughly 80 feet square – surrounded by granite walls up to 8 feet thick and 20 feet high, with square towers and a gatehouse. It was apparently never fully completed or permanently occupied, which is part of why its history remains so mysterious.
But apart from its history, there are also plenty of supernatural stories surrounding Ballymoon Castle. Some say that strange lights can be seen around the castle late at night, while others have heard what they believed to be ghosts walking the grounds.

How to get to Ballymoon Castle
Ahh, Ballymoon Castle! One of Ireland’s most beloved historical landmarks. Located in County Carlow, about 3km (2 miles) east of Bagenalstown (Muine Bheag), this castle has a long and storied history that continues to mesmerize visitors from around the world.
Getting to Ballymoon Castle is straightforward. By car, it’s roughly 1 hour 15 minutes from Dublin via the M9 motorway to Bagenalstown, then a short drive on the R724 Bagenalstown–Fennagh road, where a small timber footbridge leads you across to the castle. It’s a National Monument with free, unstaffed access at any time – there’s no admission fee and no set opening hours.
There’s no direct bus to the castle itself. The nearest train station is Muine Bheag (Bagenalstown) on the Dublin–Waterford line, about a 45-minute walk or short taxi ride from the castle – a scenic option if you’d rather not drive.
