How Much Income Do You Need to Retire in Ireland?

Sharing is caring!

Ireland’s immigration service says a retiree should have an individual income of €50,000 per year. That figure is for each person, and it applies to retirees who have no Irish, European, or British passport, and Americans are in that group.

Who the figure applies to

Irish citizens and British citizens can come to Ireland and live there without any conditions. Citizens of European Union countries do not need to make a formal application either, though retirees staying over 3 months must have sufficient resources and sickness insurance.

Americans are in a different group. To retire in Ireland, an American applies for a permission called Stamp 0, for what Ireland calls a person of independent means. The income figure is the first condition of that permission.

What about a couple?

Notice the word individual. For a couple, Ireland’s Citizens Information service says your joint income should be €100,000 per year.

The immigration service’s own page gives no figure for couples.

What kind of income counts?

  • Pension income counts.
  • Readily accessible funds count.
  • Investment sums are not normally measured, according to the official page.

Income is not the only money test

On top of the income, you must have access to a lump sum of money to cover any sudden major expenses.

The official pages give no figure in euros for it. The immigration service says the lump sum should be equal to, for example, the price of a residential dwelling in the State. That is an example of its size, not an instruction to buy a home.

How you prove your income

You have to prove it in a particular way:

  • Your financial documents go into a spreadsheet, converted into euros.
  • The spreadsheet shows all income and spending each month.
  • It must be certified by an Irish accountancy firm, not your accountant at home.

Your application also includes 6 months of bank statements.

The check does not happen only once. When you renew Stamp 0, you send a renewal form and supporting documents, again with your finances verified by an Irish-based accountant.

The other conditions

Money is the first condition, not the only one. You also need private medical insurance with full cover in private hospitals, and you must apply before arriving in Ireland. The average processing time is 4 months.

The figures at a glance

  • One person: €50,000 a year, according to the immigration service
  • A couple: €100,000 a year joint income, according to Citizens Information
  • Lump sum: no euro figure given, with the price of a home as the official example
  • Proof: a monthly spreadsheet in euros, certified by an Irish accountancy firm

Rules and fees change, so read the official page at irishimmigration.ie before you apply.
