New Passport Rules for Britain to Ireland Ferries Start September 28

If you’re planning to reach Ireland by ferry from Britain, there’s an important change coming. From 28 September 2026, passengers on certain Britain–Ireland ferry routes will need to show a valid passport before boarding.

This matters for anyone booking a sailing as part of their Ireland trip — whether you’re driving over for a touring holiday or just hopping across for a weekend in Dublin or the Wild Atlantic Way. The days of travelling with just a driving licence or national ID card are ending on these routes.

Our advice? Check your passport now. Make sure it’s valid and not close to expiring. Ferry bookings often happen months in advance, and the last thing you want is a surprise at the terminal when you’re ready to board.

It’s a small change, but one worth noting before you finalise those Ireland travel plans.
