History of Glenveagh Castle
Glenveagh Castle, located in County Donegal, Ireland, is a 19th-century neo-Gothic castle that was built on the site of an earlier 17th-century Scottish tower house. The castle’s construction began in 1867 under the ownership of John George Adair and it was completed in 1873. The castle is surrounded by a large estate which includes some of the last remaining parts of the vast Glenveagh National Park, home to Ireland’s largest herd of red deer.
The history of Glenveagh Castle is one that has been shaped by many powerful individuals and families. In 1610, Sir Cahir O’Doherty was granted the land by King James I, and in 1611 he built a large tower house known as ‘Ballymagorry’. This was destroyed during the Irish Rebellion of 1641 and remained a ruin until Adair bought the estate in 1859. He transformed it into the grand castle we see today and filled it with some of the most luxurious possessions of the time, including an extensive library, a grand piano and some priceless artworks.
In 1906, the estate was bought by American millionaire Henry McIlhenny who used it as his summer home until his death in 1975. He bequeathed Glenveagh to Ireland’s Office of Public Works with instructions to open it to the public. Today, the castle is a popular tourist attraction and provides visitors with an insight into the grandeur of 19th-century Irish life.
