Is Charleville Castle Worth Visiting?

Is Charleville Castle Worth Visiting? – Charleville Castle is one of the most impressive Gothic-style castles in all of Ireland. It’s located in County Offaly, near the town of Tullamore and the River Clodiagh. The first mansion house on the site was built by Thomas Moore circa 1641, but the estate passed through many different hands before Charles William Bury, 1st Earl of Charleville, had it rebuilt in the 1800s. The new castle was designed by Francis Johnston and took over a decade to complete.

Nowadays, Charleville Castle is open to the public and is a popular tourist attraction. It’s well worth a visit if you’re ever in the area! As you wander around the grounds and buildings, you’ll get a sense of a bygone era. There’s also plenty to explore inside the castle itself, from the grand staircase to the unique paintings and antiques. The castle boasts some of Ireland’s largest collections of antiques, including furniture from Ireland’s Great Famine period, as well as Victorian and Edwardian pieces.

The castle is also home to the Charleville Forest Ghost, a mysterious spirit that supposedly inhabits the grounds. Some people believe it’s the ghost of Charles William Bury himself, while others say it’s an ancient druid spirit. Whatever the case may be, many visitors have reported experiencing strange and unexplained phenomena during their visit.
