Is Cú Chulainn’s Castle worth visiting? Yes, if you like legend, free sites and a short, easy stop. Cú Chulainn’s Castle, also called Castletown Motte or Dún Dealgan, is a National Monument just outside Dundalk in County Louth. It is a grassy mound topped by a small Gothic-style tower, not a full medieval castle, so go for the story and the views rather than a big visitor attraction.
The mound stands on the site of an ancient fort, Dún Dealgan (“the fort of Dealga”), which local legend links to the childhood of the hero Cú Chulainn from the Ulster Cycle of Irish myth. The stories are legend rather than recorded history, so treat any dates for him with caution. The mound itself is a Norman motte, raised around the late 12th century by the de Verdun family, and in 1210 it was a stronghold of Hugh de Lacy, Earl of Ulster.
The tower you see today is much later. Known as Byrne’s Folly, it is the remains of a Gothic-revival house built around 1780 by a local merchant, Patrick Byrne, who was said to have a smuggler’s past. The house was damaged in the 1798 Rebellion, and only the castellated tower survives.
What to expect: there is no visitor centre, no guided tours, no furnished rooms or exhibits, and the tower is not open to go inside. Entry to the site is free. You can climb the mound for a look at the tower and the surrounding countryside, but paths can be steep and muddy, so wear proper shoes. It is a quick visit, easily paired with a wander around Dundalk or a trip to other north Louth sites.
How to get to Cú Chulainn’s Castle
Cú Chulainn’s Castle is in Castletown, just north-west of Dundalk town in County Louth, on Mount Avenue overlooking the Castletown River. Dundalk is about an hour’s drive north of Dublin on the M1.
By car: Take the M1 north to Dundalk, then follow signs towards Castletown and Mount Avenue. There is no parking at the gate on the narrow lane, so please do not block it. Park in the nearby housing estate, a short walk away, and use the stone steps beside the gate to enter the grounds.
By train or bus: Dundalk has a rail station on the Dublin–Belfast line and is served by Bus Éireann and other coach services from Dublin. From the town centre, the site is a short taxi ride away, or a walk of a few kilometres. Check current timetables with Irish Rail and Bus Éireann before you travel.
