Joe Biden’s Homecoming to Ireland Celebrated in Grand Style!
Joe Biden’s Homecoming to Ireland Celebrated in Grand Style! – In April 2023, US President Joe Biden took a three-day tour of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland – taking time out to visit his ancestral homeland in County Louth. There was an outpouring of support as thousands lined the streets to greet him on a memorable visit!
The President often speaks of his Irish heritage, and had promised to personally visit Ireland during his term in office. A genealogist researching Mr Biden’s family history estimates he is ‘roughly five-eighths’ Irish – stemming from the late 1840s departure of his maternal great-great-grandfather Owen Finnegan from Carlingford, County Louth.
During his speech in Dundalk, he shared that his ancestors left Ireland at around the same time as former US President Barack Obama’s great-great-great-grandfather Falmouth Kearney, who hailed from Moneygall in County Offaly. “They would never have dreamed that their grandsons would have been presidents of the United States,” he said.
The President was welcomed by a crowd of around 5,000 people in Dundalk, before embarking on a tour of Carlingford Castle with Tánaiste (Irish Deputy Prime Minister) Micheál Martin. When asked about his feelings on visiting, he replied: “It’s wonderful. It feels like I’m coming home.” Despite the wet weather, he added: “It’s fine – it’s Ireland.”
Mr Biden also visited a café to meet staff and address a crowd at a local pub. “When you’re here you wonder why anybody would want to leave,” he remarked.
The US President went on to make further visits throughout the week – including speeches at the Oireachtas (Irish parliament) and meetings with relatives in Ballina. It was a fantastic celebration for both Joe Biden and the country of Ireland, and a reminder that our shared history connects us all.
