Do the Chieftains still exist?
The Chieftains are one of the most renowned Irish folk bands in history, having delighted audiences for over five decades. Formed in Dublin, Ireland in 1962 by Paddy Moloney, Seán Potts and Michael Tubridy, The Chieftains have gone on to become a household name throughout the world for their unique blend of traditional and modern Irish music.
The Chieftains have continued to perform, record and tour in the decades since their formation, although the original line-up of Paddy Moloney (uilleann pipes, tin whistle), Seán Potts (tin whistle) and Michael Tubridy (flute) was replaced in 1979 when Derek Bell joined the band on harp and keyboard. In 2018, The Chieftains celebrated their 56th anniversary, making them one of the longest-running folk bands in history.
Though members have come and gone since the formation of The Chieftains, the group’s original vision has remained strong through all these years: to create and perform traditional Irish music with passion, integrity, and a sense of joy that can be shared throughout the world. The Chieftains are still actively performing today, having released their most recent album in 2015.
So yes, The Chieftains still exist! They may have changed over the years since their formation in 1962 but they remain one of the world’s most beloved traditional Irish folk bands.
