Munster Man with Luck of the Irish wins lotto 3 times in 14 years.
Munster Man with Luck of the Irish wins lotto 3 times in 14 years. – A Munster man has undeniably been blessed with the luck of the Irish, having won the lottery an impressive three times in fourteen years. In June 2017 he made his way to Lotto headquarters in Dublin and collected his latest winnings of nearly €20,000 – a sum that pales in comparison to his earlier wins of €300,000 and €500,000! His first success came in 2004 when he won the Lotto Plus 1, followed by a syndicate win in 2006.
Preferring to stay anonymous, this lucky man commented on his triple triumph by saying: “I paid for my house and was able to help out family which was great. I also got to do lots of travel, something I hadn’t had an opportunity to do up to then. I have had a good time.” It would appear that he is Ireland’s luckiest man!
Where does the phrase “the luck of the Irish” come from?
Contrary to popular belief, this saying was not created in Ireland. According to Edward T. O’Donnell, an Associate Professor of History at Holy Cross College and author of “1001 Things Everyone Should Know About Irish American History,” the term is not Irish in origin.
During the gold and silver rush years of the 19th century, many successful miners were of Irish and Irish American birth. This association led to the expression “the luck of the Irish” with a somewhat criticizing connotation, suggesting that only through luck could these individuals succeed, as opposed to brains.
There is also speculation that the phrase has an even older history. The Irish hold a strong tradition of storytelling, often with references to luck and fortune. In fact, their ancient Celts believed in the power of good luck and fortune and associated them with gods and goddesses.
The word “luck” itself can be traced back to Middle Dutch, coming from ‘luc’, a shortening of ‘gheluc’ meaning “happiness, good fortune.” It was likely introduced into the English language in the 15th century as a gambling term.
Regardless of its origin and intent, many have come to associate the phrase “the luck of the Irish” with St. Patrick’s Day, or sports teams such as the Boston Celtics or Notre Dame Fighting Irish. However, it is important to remember that this phrase was not created in Ireland and does not necessarily reflect the beliefs of its people

5 Real Life Examples of the Luck of the Irish
The Luck of the Irish is renowned, and there are many real life examples to back it up.
One such example is the EuroMillions Lottery. The largest jackpot ever won on the EuroMillions was from Ireland – Dolores McNamara from Limerick scooped an astonishing €115 million in July 2005! What’s more, there have been 15 jackpot winners from the Emerald Isle – not too shabby for such a small country!
The Eurovision Song Contest is another example of Irish luck. Ireland holds the record for the most number of wins (7, in case you were wondering) and also for the most consecutive years with a win (3!).
Online slot machines have also been known to produce lucky winners. The biggest ever recorded win on an online slot machine was in Ireland – Sean Doyle from County Down spun the reels to a cool €4.8 million! Talk about luck!
Irish sport is another testament to the Luck of the Irish. It’s remarkable that such a small nation with a population of less than 5 million people has achieved such high levels of sporting success – it certainly suggests something more than mere hard work and determination.
The last example on our list is rather extraordinary – the lost island of Atlantis. A Swedish scientist, Dr Ulf Erlingsson, has put forward the claim that Ireland may be the mythical island! It might sound far-fetched, but check out his reasoning here. Even if it is a long shot, it could certainly explain the Luck of the Irish!

The man who won the lottery 14 times
How a rogue Romanian economist legally gamed the lottery and won millions of dollars around the world.
Stefan Mandel, a Romanian mathematician and entrepreneur, became a folk hero when he successfully used his algorithm to exploit the Virginia state lottery in 1992.
His strategy allowed him to buy every possible combination at once, earning him a one-time payout of $14 million. He then split this sum between himself and investors who had contributed to purchase the tickets. Since then, all 44 US states that run lotteries have implemented laws preventing the replication of Mandel’s strategy.
After declaring bankruptcy in 1995, Mandel spent 10 years running investment schemes, one of which earned him a 10-month jail sentence in Israel. He now lives a quiet life on a remote tropical island in Vanuatu, having retired from the lottery. Despite never revealing his algorithm, Mandel’s legacy lives on in the laws that protect against similar strategies being implemented. Reflecting on his experience, he said: “I’m a man who takes risks, but in a calculated way.” The chances were, as he had predicted, in his favor.

Which County is the Luckiest In Ireland?
It’s official: Louth – the smallest county in Ireland – can now lay claim to being the luckiest when it comes to National Lottery wins. Recent data released by Lotto HQ has revealed that, since its launch 30 years ago, there have been an incredible 76 lucky Lotto jackpot winners from Louth – the most per head of population in the whole of Ireland.
The figures were based on the 2016 Census Population data, and showed that Lotto winners hailing from Louth have won a total of €89m. That’s 5.9 Lotto jackpot winners for every 10,000 people living in the county.
In second place was Donegal, which boasted 5.65 Lotto Jackpot wins per 10,000 people. Mayo followed in third place with 4.44 per 10,000 people, then Dublin with 4.25 and Carlow in fifth spot with 3.86 Lotto Jackpots per 10,000 people respectively.
In light of the data release, National Lottery CEO Dermot Griffin commented: “One of the most frequent questions we are asked is what is Ireland’s luckiest Lotto county. There has always been great rivalry amongst our players all over the country to claim this title. But it is important to note that chance has no memory and playing Lotto is purely a matter of luck. Whether it is in Tipperary, Laois, or Louth, in a shop or online from the comfort of your own home, you have the exact same chance of winning a prize.
“However, our Lotto players in Louth have punched above their weight for the last 30 years with considerably more Lotto millionaires per head of population. Congratulations to the county and all its winners!”
So if you’re looking for your luckiest chance at a National Lottery win, it looks like you should be heading straight to the smallest county in Ireland – Louth. Who knows? You could be the next big jackpot winner!
