There is a secret flat underneath this Dublin pub
Patrons of a popular Dublin pub have been surprised to learn that its cellar was once home to a secret tenement flat. The Old Royal Oak Pub, located in Kilmainham, has been run by the Costello family for 50 years since first opening in 1839.
A Twitter post from the pub revealed its former history and how many years ago its cellar was used as someone’s living quarters. “This cellar underneath our snug was until 50 years ago, a tenement flat where a man lived on his own,” they said. “No toilet, gas lighting and an open fire.” The post added that they would show visitors the fireplace once the kegs are removed.
The revelation left social media users astounded, with many commenting that it would be an “ideal” home in the current cost of living climate. The Old Royal Oak Pub and its mysterious history has certainly piqued people’s curiosity.
