What does Sligo mean in Irish?

The name Sligo comes from the Irish language, where it is derived from ‘Sliabh gCua’ meaning shelly place or mountain of shells. This was due to all the shells present in the region, which were once used as currency. One of the most prominent figures in Sligo’s history is St Colmcille, who can be considered one of Ireland’s patron saints.
