Are the Corona’s the best Irish rock band ever?

The Coronas are an Irish rock band that have been around since 2007. They originate from Dublin and are now based between Dublin and London, releasing their music via their own independent record label, 3ú Records. The Coronas have released seven studio albums: Heroes or Ghosts (2007), Tony Was an Ex-Con (2009), Closer to You (2011), The Long Way (2014), Trust the Wire (2017), True Love Waits (2020) and Time Stopped (2022).

The beginnings of The Coronas dates back to Terenure College where three of their members – Danny O’Reilly, Graham Knox and Conor Egan – formed a band called Kiros with a friend, which then split and reformed as Corona. The name was later changed to The Coronas to avoid confusion with the Italian dance outfit.

The Coronas have been widely acclaimed for their music, particularly with their first album Heroes or Ghosts (2007) and Tony Was an Ex-Con (2009), which won Best Irish Album at the 2010 Meteor Awards, beating Snow Patrol’s Up To Now and U2’s No Line on the Horizon. Closer to You came out in 2011 and was their first UK release, while The Long Way (2014) was The Coronas’ debut album with Island Records.

The Coronas have certainly earned their reputation as one of the best Irish rock bands in history. With seven albums released, an impressive list of awards and accolades and a strong fan base, they are no doubt one of the top acts to look out for. There’s no denying that The Coronas will go down in history as one of the greatest Irish rock bands ever.

Incidentally the Coronas have been chosen to play at the Joe Biden speech in Ballina.

With its haunting melody and meaningful lyrics, “Zombie” resonates with people all over the world who have suffered from or witnessed political unrest or conflict. “Zombie” is not only a powerful statement about war and peace, but also an incredibly catchy track that many fans still love today.
