Experience the transformation of this traditional Irish Cottage

Experience the transformation of this traditional Irish Cottage – This traditional Irish Cottage has been transformed from the ruins it once was. Located in Rashenny, just outside of Ballyliffin Co. Donegal, this cottage dates back to the early 1800’s.

After purchasing the property five years ago, planning permission was obtained which allowed for refurbishment using traditional methods, but with modern conveniences. Wooden sash windows, white washed walls, traditional Donegal lint thatch, flagstone floors, exposed wood couple ceilings and a traditional Irish dresser and farmhouse table provide the perfect country home atmosphere.

Surrounded by wild flower meadows and mature trees – 50 of which were planted during refurbishment – this three bedroom two bathroom cottage offers a claw foot soaking tub in one of the bathrooms, solar power, car charging point and a snug with projector for film nights.

Heated by underfloor heating, the views from this home are remarkable; enjoy sights of Pollan Strand, Ballyliffin Golf Club, Malin Head, Isle of Doagh, Trawbreaga Bay and the Atlantic from the feet of Coolcross Hill.

This transformation is nothing short of remarkable – Experience the transformation of this traditional Irish Cottage.

History of Oul House

The original cottage on the land dates back to the 1700s, with earliest surviving records from the early 1800s showing a thriving clachan (cluster of houses and outbuildings). At its peak, it is estimated that three cottages and four or five outbuildings existed on the property.

The Dohertys and the McCauls were the last inhabitants of the cottage, leaving for England in the 1950-60s. After this time, it was used as a storage unit for potatoes or sheltering for sheep and other livestock. The majority of outbuildings had been removed from the land by then, with trees planted on its windward side spreading into the remaining wall steads.

When purchased in 2018, the two cottages had been joined together in one long row measuring over 100 feet. The trees had caused damage to one end of the cottages, reducing it to a pile of stones. Fortunately, the other end was still structurally sound and able to be salvaged. Planning permission was applied for and restoration of the cottage began in 2019, with completion in 2022.

Today, there are less than 1500 thatched cottages remaining in Ireland, making the successful restoration of this cottage a source of pride for all involved. It is hoped that future generations will be able to enjoy it for many years to come.
