Huntington Castle is a spectacular Jacobean-style castle located in County Carlow, Ireland that has been owned by the same family since 1625. Built by the First Lord Esmonde, it replaced an earlier garrison and Franciscan friary that had previously occupied the site. Across its long history, various members of the Durdin-Robertson family have added extensions and personal touches to the castle, making it a unique architectural treasure.
The interior of Huntington Castle is very much in keeping with traditional castle décor, featuring dark corridors, nooks and crannies, tapestries, armour and other historic artifacts. There are also several hunting trophies from various animals displayed inside the castle. On the outside, visitors are able to explore the many acres of beautiful gardens that surround it, as well as its peaceful riverside setting.
Despite its age and rich history, Huntington Castle has a certain eerie charm about it. Many visitors can’t help but imagine what it would be like to wander through its corridors with a hand-held candle for light, only for the candle to mysteriously blow out and strange sounds to follow. It’s almost as if Huntington Castle is begging you to explore its secrets.
History buffs and curious visitors alike will love exploring this unique piece of Irish heritage, making it an ideal destination in County Carlow. Its atmosphere is one that stays with you long after your journey has ended, so don’t miss a chance to explore this fascinating castle.
