The History of Scrabo Tower
The Scrabo Tower is a 122-foot-tall (37 m) red sandstone tower that stands atop Scrabo Hill in Newtownards, County Down, Northern Ireland. It was built in 1857 as a memorial to the 3rd Marquess of Londonderry, Charles William Stewart, by his son the 4th Marquess. It was designed by Thomas Hopper, a renowned Victorian architect based in London. The tower is now owned and maintained by the National Trust and it is a popular tourist attraction.
The Scrabo Tower commemorates the life of Charles William Stewart, who was born in 1788 and fought in the Napoleonic Wars. He was married twice, first to Catherine Bligh and then Frances Anne Vane. His second marriage was a wealthy heiress, which meant that Charles had to change his surname to hers. This is why he went from being called Stewart to Vane. After inheriting the family estate in County Down in 1822, Charles became known as the 3rd Marquess of Londonderry.
The Scrabo Tower stands as a lasting reminder of the 3rd Marquess and his life. It is an impressive sight, with its sandstone structure towering over Scrabo Hill in County Down. Visitors can still admire the tower today and learn about the history of Charles William Stewart during their visit. Scrabo Tower is a must-see attraction for anyone visiting Northern Ireland, and it is a fitting memorial to the 3rd Marquess of Londonderry.
